Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Carpenter, and you’re listening to the Lexington Spinal Care podcast, coming to you from right here in Lexington, South Carolina. Today we’re tackling something I get asked about almost every single week in my office. What do chiropractors actually do? Because honestly — there’s a lot of confusion out there. A lot of myths. And I think it’s time we clear some of that up.

So let’s just dive right in.

The first myth I hear all the time is this one… “Chiropractors just crack backs.” And look, I get it. That’s the image most people have. You walk in, something pops, you walk out. But that’s really only a small part of what we do. When I work with a patient, I’m looking at the whole picture. How you move. How you stand. Where your pain is coming from. We’re trained to assess the spine and the nervous system, the muscles, the joints — all of it. The adjustment, that popping sound people talk about, that’s just one tool in the toolbox. It’s called spinal manipulation, and what it’s really doing is restoring movement to joints that have gotten stuck or restricted. That sound you hear — that’s just gas releasing from the joint. It’s completely normal. And honestly, not every adjustment even makes that sound.

Now here’s another big one. “Chiropractic care isn’t real medicine, it’s not backed by science.” I hear this one and I completely understand where it comes from. But here’s what’s interesting — chiropractic care is one of the most well-researched approaches for things like low back pain, neck pain, and headaches. Major health organizations around the world recognize spinal manipulation as a legitimate, effective option for musculoskeletal conditions. We go through years of graduate-level training. We study anatomy, physiology, neurology, radiology — the works. We’re doctors of chiropractic. It’s a real doctorate. It’s rigorous. And we genuinely care about getting you better.

Let me address one more myth, because this one keeps people from even walking through the door. “Once you start going to a chiropractor, you have to go forever.” I’ve heard this so many times. And here’s the truth — nobody is going to trap you into anything. Yes, some people choose to come in regularly for maintenance care because they feel better and they want to stay that way. That’s their choice. But plenty of patients come in for a specific issue, we address it, they get relief, and they move on with their lives. The goal is always to get you to a point where you need us less, not more.

So what can you do starting today? First, pay attention to your posture. If you’re sitting at a desk or looking down at your phone for hours, your spine is under a lot of stress. Take breaks. Move around. Stretch your neck gently side to side. Second, don’t ignore that nagging pain. A lot of people wait months — or even years — before they come in. The sooner you address something, the easier it usually is to treat.

Now, when should you actually come see us? If you’ve been dealing with back pain, neck pain, headaches, or even shoulder and hip discomfort that just won’t go away — that’s a good reason to get evaluated. You don’t need to be in crisis mode to walk through our door. We love seeing people who just want to be proactive about their health too.

Look, my whole goal here is to take away the mystery and the fear around chiropractic care. We’re here to help you move better, feel better, and live your life without pain holding you back.
