Can Chiropractic Boost Your Immune System? Here’s What We Know

In this episode, Dr. Carpenter of Lexington Spinal Care tackles one of the most common questions he receives, especially during cold and flu season: can chiropractic care boost your immune system?

Rather than offering a simple yes or no, Dr. Carpenter walks listeners through what the research actually shows about the relationship between spinal health, the nervous system, and immune function.

Whether you’re a longtime chiropractic patient or just curious about the science, this episode offers a thoughtful and informative look at how your body’s systems are more connected than you might think.

Hey there, and welcome back to the podcast. I’m Doctor Carpenter with Lexington Spinal Care here in Lexington, South Carolina, and today we’re diving into a question I get asked surprisingly often — especially during cold and flu season. Can chiropractic care actually boost your immune system? It’s a great question, and honestly, the answer is a little more nuanced than a simple yes or no. So stick with me here, because I think you’re going to find this really interesting.

Now, here’s the thing. When most people think about chiropractic, they think neck pain, back pain, maybe a stiff shoulder. And yes, absolutely, that is a huge part of what we do. But the connection between your spine and your overall health goes a lot deeper than most people realize. And that connection starts with your nervous system.

Let me break this down for you. Your nervous system is essentially the command center of your entire body. It controls and coordinates everything — your heart, your digestion, your breathing, and yes, your immune response too. And your spine is the protective highway that your nervous system runs through. So when something in your spine is out of alignment, when you’ve got tension or restriction in those joints, it can create interference in that communication system. Think of it like a garden hose with a kink in it. The water can still get through, but not as freely as it should.

Here’s what’s interesting. Your immune system and your nervous system are in constant communication with each other. They’re not separate systems working independently — they’re deeply connected. Researchers who study what’s called psychoneuroimmunology, which is essentially the science of how the brain and nervous system influence immune function, have found that chronic stress and nervous system dysfunction can have a real impact on how well your immune system performs. Now, I’m not saying a chiropractic adjustment is a cure for any illness. That would be an overstatement, and I’m not going to do that. But what I am saying is that when your nervous system is functioning better, your body as a whole tends to function better too.

There’s also something worth mentioning about the role chiropractic plays in reducing physical stress on the body. When your spine is misaligned, your muscles are working overtime trying to compensate. That creates chronic tension, and chronic tension puts your body in a low-level stress response. Over time, that kind of ongoing stress can wear down your body’s natural defenses. Chiropractic adjustments help restore proper movement and alignment, which takes some of that physical stress burden off your system.

So what can you do starting today? First, pay attention to your posture. Seriously. How you sit, how you stand, how you sleep — these all have a direct impact on your spinal health and your nervous system. Second, stay hydrated, move your body regularly, and prioritize sleep. I know that sounds basic, but these fundamentals support everything your body is trying to do, including fight off illness. And third, manage your stress. Whether that’s a daily walk, some quiet time in the morning, or just getting outside — chronic stress is one of the biggest enemies of a healthy immune system.

Now, when should you come see us? If you’ve been feeling run down, if you’re getting sick more often than you used to, if you’ve got that nagging tension in your neck and shoulders that never quite goes away — those are all signs that your body might be under more stress than it can handle on its own. A chiropractic evaluation can help us figure out where your spine might be restricting your nervous system, and we can build a care plan that supports your overall health, not just your back pain.

You know, I always tell my patients — don’t wait until something is really wrong to start taking care of yourself. Your body is always sending you signals. The question is whether you’re listening.
