Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Carpenter with Lexington Spinal Care, and today we’re talking about something that is really close to my heart — chiropractic care during pregnancy. Now, if you’re expecting, or if someone you love is expecting, I want you to stick with me for the next few minutes, because what we’re going to talk about today could genuinely make a difference in how comfortable and supported that pregnancy feels from start to finish.

Here’s what I hear a lot. Pregnant moms come in and they say, “Doctor Carpenter, I didn’t even know I could see a chiropractor while I was pregnant.” And I completely understand that. There’s not a lot of conversation out there about this. But the truth is, chiropractic care is not only safe during pregnancy — for most women, it can be incredibly beneficial.

So let me break this down for you. When you’re pregnant, your body is going through some pretty remarkable changes. Your center of gravity is shifting forward as your belly grows. Your hips are widening. Your ligaments — and this is important — your ligaments are becoming more relaxed and flexible because of hormonal changes. That’s actually by design. Your body is preparing for childbirth. But here’s the thing… all of that shifting and loosening can put a lot of stress on your spine and your pelvis. And when your pelvis isn’t sitting in proper alignment, that’s when things start to get uncomfortable.

Lower back pain, hip pain, sciatica — that shooting or burning sensation down the leg — these are some of the most common complaints I hear from pregnant patients. And a lot of women just accept it. They think, “Well, this is just part of being pregnant.” And while some discomfort is normal, suffering through it doesn’t have to be.

Here’s what’s interesting. The pelvis plays a central role in pregnancy. When the pelvis is misaligned, it can reduce the amount of space available for the baby to move and develop — and it can also affect the baby’s positioning as you get closer to your due date. Gentle chiropractic adjustments focused on the pelvis can help restore balance, reduce tension in the surrounding muscles and ligaments, and support a more comfortable pregnancy overall.

Now, I want to be clear — we work closely with your OB or your midwife. Chiropractic care is part of your team, not a replacement for your prenatal care. And we use gentle, specialized techniques specifically designed for pregnancy. We’re not doing anything aggressive. Everything is modified to keep you and your baby safe and comfortable.

So what can you do right now? A few things. First, pay attention to your posture. As your belly grows, it’s tempting to arch your lower back to compensate. Try to be mindful of that. Think about keeping your shoulders back and your hips level when you stand. Second, supportive footwear matters more than you’d think. Avoid flat shoes or high heels when you can. Something with a little cushion and support makes a real difference. And third — please don’t sleep on your back as you progress into your second and third trimester. Side sleeping, especially on your left side, takes pressure off major blood vessels and supports better circulation.

And here’s my gentle encouragement to you. If you are pregnant and you are dealing with back pain, hip pain, round ligament discomfort, or even headaches — please don’t just white knuckle it through nine months. Come in and let us take a look. We’ll do a thorough evaluation, we’ll talk through your history, and we’ll build a plan that works for where you are in your pregnancy.

You deserve to feel supported during this season. Your body is doing something incredible, and the more comfortable and balanced you feel, the better for you and for your baby.

Thank you so much for tuning in today. If you have questions or you’d like to schedule an appointment, give us a call or visit us at Lexington Spinal Care right here in Lexington, South Carolina. We would love to be part of your pregnancy journey. I’m Doctor Carpenter, and we’ll see you next time.
