How Bad Posture Affects Your Spine

Um, hey guys, Dr. Garpner here. Um,
again, one of the spinal checks that we
do with you in your exam again is all is
about your posture. One of the things
that we see here on a daily basis, kind
of what we call tech neck. Um, you know,
unfortunately in today’s time, we spend
all our time on phones and computers and
tablets and so forth, desk work and that
sort of thing. And when the head is
overlined with the shoulders, um, that’s
where we want things to be from a
natural weightbearing standpoint. The
adult head weighs anywhere from 10 to 12
lb. For every inch that head moves
forward, it actually weighs 10 more
pounds. So, it it kind of gets really
exaggerated the further your head gets
away from the center of your gravity. No
different than if you were holding a
bowling ball here. We we can hold it a
while just cuz it’s close to the center
of our gravity. But if we stretch our
arm out, we try to hold the bowling ball
out here. Obviously, it gets very heavy
very fast. No different with the body.
So, the more this really kind of gets
away from that, we’ll see that we create
a lot of stress and strain. And this is
one of the things that can really kind
of set us up with a lot of arthritic and
degenerative changes in the neck. Um and
one of the most common causes of going
back to the very first thing we talk
about in a subluxation is really
affecting the range of motion of a joint
which kind of sets up every um other
problem that we basically have in our
spine.
