In this episode, Dr. Carpenter of Lexington Spinal Care in Lexington, South Carolina explores the powerful connection between sleep and spinal healthāa relationship many patients never consider. Poor sleep doesn’t just leave you tired; it can contribute to increased stiffness, pain, and nervous system dysfunction that affects how you feel throughout the day.
Dr. Carpenter breaks down why waking up achy or unrested may be a sign that your spine and nervous system aren’t getting the recovery they need overnight. Whether you’re a current patient or just curious about your back health, this episode offers eye-opening insights into how your nighttime habits impact your body from the inside out.

Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Carpenter with Lexington Spinal Care, right here in Lexington, South Carolina. And today we’re talking about something that might surprise you ā sleep. Now, I know what you’re thinking. “Doctor Carpenter, I came here to learn about my back, not my bedtime.” But here’s the thing ā the two are deeply connected. More connected than most people realize. So if you’ve been waking up stiff, achy, or just not feeling rested, stick with me, because this one’s for you.
Let’s start with the basics. When you sleep, your body isn’t just resting ā it’s actively repairing itself. Your muscles relax, your discs in your spine actually rehydrate, and your nervous system gets a chance to reset. Think of it like plugging your phone in at night. Sleep is your body’s charging time. And when you don’t get enough of it ā or when the quality is poor ā that repair process gets cut short.
Now here’s what’s really interesting about your spinal discs. Those discs sit between each of your vertebrae and act as cushions. During the day, when you’re upright and moving around, gravity compresses those discs. Fluid gets pushed out. But at night, when you’re lying down and the pressure is off, those discs absorb fluid back in. That’s why most people are actually slightly taller in the morning than they are at night ā it’s true. Poor sleep means less time for that rehydration to happen. And over time, that can contribute to disc degeneration, stiffness, and pain.
But it doesn’t stop at the spine. Let’s talk about the nervous system for a second. Your nervous system controls everything ā your movement, your organ function, your pain response, all of it. And sleep is when your nervous system does some of its most important housekeeping. There’s actually a system in your brain that flushes out waste products while you sleep. When sleep is disrupted, that process gets interrupted. And one of the results? Your nervous system becomes more sensitive to pain. So if you’re already dealing with back or neck discomfort, poor sleep can actually make that pain feel worse ā even if nothing else has changed.
So what can you do about it? Let me give you a few practical things to start with today. First ā look at your sleep position. Sleeping on your stomach is really tough on your spine. It forces your neck to rotate for hours at a time, and it flattens the natural curve in your lower back. If you can, try sleeping on your side with a pillow between your knees, or on your back with a pillow under your knees. Both of those positions support your spine’s natural curves much better.
Second ā think about your mattress and pillow. You don’t need to spend a fortune, but your pillow should keep your head and neck aligned with the rest of your spine. If you wake up with a stiff neck every morning, your pillow might be part of the problem.
And third ā try to create a consistent sleep routine. Going to bed and waking up at the same time every day ā yes, even on weekends ā helps regulate your nervous system and improves the quality of your sleep over time.
Now, when should you come see us? If you’re waking up in pain, if your sleep is being disrupted by back or neck discomfort, or if you feel like you can never quite get comfortable at night ā those are all signs that your spine might need some attention. A chiropractic evaluation can help us figure out if there’s something structural going on that’s contributing to your sleep troubles. We’re not just here for when things get really bad. We’re here to help you feel better day to day ā and night to night.
Sleep and spinal health really do go hand in hand. Take care of one, and you’re supporting the other. It’s that simple.
Alright, thank you so much for spending a few minutes with me today. I truly appreciate it. If you have questions or you’d like to schedule an evaluation, we’d love to see you here at Lexington Spinal Care in Lexington, South Carolina. You can reach out to us directly ā we’re always happy to help. Until next time, take care of your spine, get some good rest, and we’ll talk soon.

Dr. Carpenter and his staff are very nice and welcoming! Every time i go in for treatment , i come out feeling much better! My back had been giving me a fit for months and i was taking ibuprofen for temporary relief. I'm impressed that Dr. Carpenter has never told me to take any pain medicine. Noooow after 4 treatments, i'm getting out of bed instead of rolling out of bed! I will continue to go to Lexington Spinal Care and would recommend them to evetyone who is having spinal issues.

I have been a patient of Lexington Spinal Care for the last 12 years. I love Dr. Carpenter and all the staff! Everyone is so caring and friendly- they make you feel like family! From Lauren and Stephanie welcoming you at the front desk; to Annie and Julie who do different therapies; and Angie and Trevor performing various treatments and therapies. You never feel like a number and they greet you by name. They offer many different types of treatments and consistently upgrade their equipment. Over the years, I have received adjustments, pettibon therapy, spinal decompression, rolling table, TENS, and ultrasound therapies. However, other therapies are offered in the office if you need. Dr. Carpenter is always open to trying different therapies, if other things have not worked. He is willing to work with you to help you feel your best!!!
