Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Carpenter from Lexington Spinal Care, and today we’re talking about something I hear about almost every single day in my office ā pinched nerves. Whether it’s that sharp, shooting pain down your arm, or that burning, tingling sensation running into your leg, nerve irritation is one of the most common things that brings people through our doors. And honestly, it can be one of the most misunderstood. So today I want to clear some of that up for you.
Now, here’s the thing ā the term “pinched nerve” is something most people have heard, but a lot of folks aren’t quite sure what’s actually happening in their body when it occurs. Let me break this down for you. Your spine is made up of individual bones called vertebrae, and between each of those bones, nerves branch out from your spinal cord and travel to different parts of your body. Those nerves control sensation, movement, and a whole lot more. When the surrounding tissue ā whether that’s a disc, a bone, or tight muscle ā puts pressure on one of those nerves, that’s when things start to go wrong.
What you feel can vary quite a bit depending on which nerve is involved and how much pressure is on it. Some people feel sharp, shooting pain. Others feel numbness or tingling ā kind of like when your foot falls asleep, but it doesn’t go away. Some people describe it as a burning sensation, or even weakness in an arm or a leg. And here’s what’s really interesting ā the pain doesn’t always show up right where the problem is. A nerve being irritated in your lower back can send pain all the way down into your foot. A problem in your neck can cause symptoms into your hand and fingers. That’s why it can sometimes be tricky to track down the actual source.
So what causes this pressure on the nerve in the first place? Well, there are a few common culprits. One of the big ones is a disc issue. The discs in your spine act like cushions between your vertebrae. When one of those discs shifts or bulges, it can press into the space where a nerve travels ā and that creates irritation. Another very common cause is what we call joint restriction, where the bones of your spine aren’t moving the way they should. When a spinal joint gets stuck or misaligned, it can narrow the space available for those nerves. Muscle tightness and inflammation around the area can also contribute to that irritation.
Now, here’s the good news ā most people dealing with nerve irritation don’t need surgery. I know that’s a fear a lot of people walk in with, and I completely understand it. But the reality is, conservative care works really well for most cases of nerve irritation. Chiropractic adjustments can help restore proper motion to restricted joints, take pressure off those irritated nerves, and give your body the environment it needs to heal. We also look at the whole picture ā your posture, how you move, what your day looks like ā because all of that matters.
There are some things you can do at home too. Staying gently active is important ā try not to let fear of pain keep you completely still, because movement helps. Avoiding positions that make the pain worse is smart in the short term. And if you’re sitting at a desk all day, taking breaks to stand and move around can make a real difference.
Now, I do want to say this clearly ā if you’re experiencing numbness, weakness, or pain that’s been hanging around for more than a few days, please don’t just wait and hope it goes away on its own. Get it evaluated. And if you ever have any loss of bladder or bowel control, that’s something to get checked out immediately ā that needs urgent medical attention.
For most people though, getting into our office sooner rather than later is the best move. The longer nerve irritation sits without being addressed, the more stubborn it can become. We’ll take a thorough look at what’s going on, talk through your options, and build a plan that makes sense for you.
If you’re in the Lexington area and you’re dealing with any of these symptoms, we would love to help. You can reach us at Lexington Spinal Care ā give us a call, stop by, or check us out online. I’m Doctor Carpenter, and thank you so much for tuning in today. Take care of yourselves, and we’ll talk again soon.

I have been a patient of Lexington Spinal Care for the last 12 years. I love Dr. Carpenter and all the staff! Everyone is so caring and friendly- they make you feel like family! From Lauren and Stephanie welcoming you at the front desk; to Annie and Julie who do different therapies; and Angie and Trevor performing various treatments and therapies. You never feel like a number and they greet you by name. They offer many different types of treatments and consistently upgrade their equipment. Over the years, I have received adjustments, pettibon therapy, spinal decompression, rolling table, TENS, and ultrasound therapies. However, other therapies are offered in the office if you need.
